The first coronavirus outbreak occurred in November 2002 in Guangdong Province of Southern China, which started with severe atypical pneumonia. By July 2003, infected patients increased to 8098, with 774 deaths in 29 countries over five continents. World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert and named it Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The causative agent was identified as SARS-CoV by the WHO on April 16, 2003. With vigorous quarantine measures, collaborative efforts, and health education, the pandemic came under Control.
