Summary

  • Case definitions are essential in identifying and diagnosing cases of disease during an outbreak. A broader (more sensitive) case definition may be used and stricter (more specific) definitions for confirmed cases, which may include laboratory diagnosis. COVID 19 can only be confirmed definitively by laboratory tests.

  • Infection Control and Prevention measures for COVID 19 include Isolation and or quarantine of cases, protective PPE for health workers, sterilization or disinfection of equipment or other items, contact tracing and active case finding community mobilization, and implementation of surveillance systems.

  • There is no treatment to cure COVID 19 at the time of writing this course, but an efficient vaccine.

  • Infection Prevention and Control of COVID 19 are particularly challenging for several reasons, including its transmissibility and surge of cases attributable to the variants, the need for coordinated international responses to the pandemic, and lack of treatment.
